What "self-hosted" really means
A self-hosted messenger runs on infrastructure your organisation controls — a dedicated server, in a region you choose — instead of a shared platform owned by someone else. What end-to-end encryption adds
End-to-end encryption (E2EE) means messages are encrypted on the sender's device and only decrypted on the recipient's — no one in between, including the server operator, can read the content. Combine E2EE with self-hosting and you get both confidentiality of content and control of infrastructure. One without the other leaves a gap.
